Best sisters in the world

Me and Minnie

I have the coolest sisters. I’m amazed by how much they support me. Another great example of this happened on Halloween. I like to dress up, but none of the adults in my family dress up anymore. Since we were trick-or-treating far from home at my parent’s house, my sister Malinda, who lives in the same town, decided to locate a last minute costume. I guess she didn’t want me to be the only adult in our party wearing one. She even managed to find the matching Aurora costume to the Maleficent one I was wearing—my very own “beasty.” What a great night!

BETWEEN THE LINES–stories behind the making of RORY’S CHOICE

The relationship between Rory and Jake was easy for me to write. It was like reliving my first year of high school. I too had a crush on a senior, and though are friendship wasn’t a secret one, he, like Jake, was completely oblivious to my infatuation.

He took me with him to all kinds of places, even taught me how to drive a stick in his very nice Mustang, but at the end of the day he’d pat me on the head and call me his “little buddy.” Yeah, it made for some very frustrating first-year moments, but I always think fondly on this first crush. A senior thought I was cool enough to hang out with. It gave me all kinds of confidence—a precious commodity for anyone who has to traipse the halls of a high school.

Now, to be honest, I’ve always wondered what it would’ve felt like to be kissed by him, so when I wrote Rory’s Choice this was the one experience I made sure Rory had 🙂

Between The Lines—stories behind the making of RORY’S CHOICE

I’ve had several people ask why I named the lead protagonist Rory. It’s a favorite name of mine. I actually picked it out years ago as the name I would give to my daughter. However, when she was born, I took one look at her and knew the name wasn’t the right one for her. Rory went back into my vault of favorite names, until it finally found a place here in my first novel.

The lead protagonist for every book I write comes from this mental vault of mine. Some of the names are linked to past people who left a mark on me, while others are names I simply love the way they roll off the tongue. ‘Rory’ stems from both categories. As a young girl I knew a boy named Rory. We didn’t hang out all that much, but I always thought his name would be fantastic for a girl—and I was right. It was awesome to finally give somebody the name Rory, even if she’s someone who only lives and breathes within the pages of a novel. She has lived up to my every expectation.

Creatively Exhausted

Not every day can be a day filled with writing. I have other pesky roles to fulfill. This week I played costume designer. My oldest son is quite crazy about his Legos. It makes birthdays and Christmas easy, but ugh! his Lego obsession is making Halloween this year extra hard. Ever since he saw the Lego movie he has said for Halloween he wanted to be Lord Business. Well, guess what? You can’t buy a Lord Business costume. He was undeterred. “You can make it for me,” he said to me. And like the crazy overachieving woman I am, I accepted the challenge. Seven hours, a knife wound in my hand from cutting cardboard, over thirty hot-glue sticks, and a good headache from all the spray paint fumes, his helmet and legs are finished—all for one night of going door-to-door begging for candy. It’s probably not worth all the effort, but I’m a mom who sometimes just can’t say no to her kids. The boy owes me big time.

Between The Lines—stories behind the making of RORY’S CHOICE

I love hearing people adore the Grandpa Kelly character, though he was not part of my original outline for the novel. It was supposed to be Ryan that caught Rory and Jake together at the lake, but the old codger popped up instead. It was weird, but when I tried writing him out of the story everything stalled. I couldn’t continue.

After about a week of this stalemate, I decided to just go with Grandpa and see where it took me. The bugger hijacked my novel, and I couldn’t be happier. His appearance, though unexpected, created arcs in the story I hadn’t even realized in my original outline, adding dimensions that wouldn’t have been possible without him. I guess my subconscious knew better than me what my story really needed.

This event taught me a great lesson in writing. Every book needs a beginning and an ending, but it’s best to let the characters lead you through the moments needed to reach the final destination.

And if right about here you’re thinking, this crazy woman talks like her characters are actually alive. To me, they are. I have a mental picture of what they look like, and on some days I can even hear the tenor of their voices in my head. Okay…now I really do sound crazy, but it gets results in my writing so I’m going with it.

Between The Lines—stories behind the making of RORY’S CHOICE

One of the funniest and yet poignant chapters in my novel RORY’S CHOICE is the Horseology chapter. What makes it even more amazing is that particular chapter was written at one of the most difficult times of my married life.

In 2008, we lived in Las Vegas during the implosion of the city’s economy. My husband had lost his job and nobody seemed to be hiring. My husband had a degree and years of experience. It didn’t matter—week-after-week he came home empty handed. Our savings was being eaten up quickly, soon we wouldn’t be able to pay our bills—a first for us. To say my husband became depressed is an understatement. I pulled through it all, by pinching pennies were I could, and writing, writing, writing, like my life depended on it.

It came time for me to write the Horseology chapter, but I am not an expert on horses. My husband, on the other hand, competed in Western Pleasure, and many other horse competitions. I needed my farm-boy, husband’s help.

On the couch he lay one Saturday morning, pale, his eyes unfocused, staring off in the distance. “Tell me about horses,” I said. His demeanor didn’t change, but he started mumbling off horse facts. I filled about three pages of insane notes on the parts of a horse and different types of equipment used on our equine friends. It was mind numbing and amazing how much he knew about horses.

Using that as my guide, Rory became the all-knowing guru of riding and Jake was like me. We know what a horse looks like, but that’s about it. It made for a hilarious dynamic between the two characters.

I always love reading this chapter. And you will too, whether you already know your way around a horse, or need to earn your degree in horseology like I did so many years ago.

My first groupie

I always thought my kids saw my writing as nothing but a bothersome hobby of mine. Let’s face it, writing books takes time, and I’m not cool enough to do it while distracted. So there are times when I’m “shhh”ing the monkeys and begging them to go outside or downstairs, especially when mommy has deadlines to meet. I was wrong. This week my kids, especially my daughter, showed me how much they “get” and support what I’m doing.

She’s told everyone, teachers, friends, her principle, strangers sitting in the stands at the football games. “My mommy’s book is coming out this week. It’s called Rory’s Choice.” Right about here she’d turn to me if I was close. “Mommy, tell them about your book.” Then she steam roll over me before I could get a word in. “I love the picture on the book. There’s this horse and a girl on it. I get to have my own copy. I’m so excited to read it…”

Who needs a PR person when I have her? I love having a “Janelle Evans groupie” living in my house.

Tootsie Tale

(This is a re-post from years ago. I don’t offer it up because I couldn’t think of anything new to write. With my novel launching this week on September 20th, this post gives me comfort. Come what may, whether my books sales or not, I am loved.)

You might think I’m weird for posting a picture of my feet.  I’m mean, let’s face it, they’re not model worthy.  But for me, this picture stands as a reminder that I have not, and will not, accomplished my goals as a writer alone.

The nail polish you see on my toes, I did not do.  It was the night before my scheduled photo-shoot with Kelsi.  I planned to use these photos to promote my very public—anyone can have access to—website and facebook fan page.  To say I was freaking out is an understatement.

At about 9:30pm, I decided my toenails had to be painted.  The perfect photos I hoped for just wouldn’t be perfect without it.  Thinking it would only take a few minutes, I chose a color from my six-year-old-daughter’s stash, since I don’t own any nail polish myself—which should have been my first clue that this was going to be a disaster.

After ten minutes of sitting on the bathtub rim cursing my shaky fingers, in walks my husband.  He took one look at the smeared hot-pink mess on my toenails and said, “sit on the counter.”

After removing my failed attempt with nail polish remover, my sweet farm boy, who has no sisters by-the-way, knelt at my dangling feet and proceeded to coat my toenails in a much better color than the one I had first chosen.  And not just one coat, but three.  This is probably why my daughter only likes daddy to do her nails.  My toes were perfect when he finished.

There have been many times in this writing endeavor of mine, when others have assisted me when I needed it most.  The members of the Henderson Writers Group, who told me the first draft of my novel “sucked”, but then gave me the tools to make it better.  The beta readers whose excitement for book two, and three helped me push through the pain of every rejection I received until my debut novel “Rory’s Choice” finally sold.  And many more.  Even you, who are reading this now, give me the strength to continue every time someone rolls their eyes and says, “Oh…you’re a writer.”  I can and will succeed, because I’m not an island—none of us are.

Thank you for taking part in this journey with me.  I hope each of you will take a moment today to recognize and thank those that support you.

Facing my first book launch

On September 20th a dream of mine will come true—my first novel, RORY’S CHOICE, will finally be available to the world. After years of rejections and disappointments I had almost consigned myself that I would have to self-publish to get it out there, or my novel would never reach the public eye. But I didn’t have to, the publishing house, Ink and Quill, took a chance on me.

At first, surviving the process of an in-house editor, and seeing my book transform into the very best product possible left me even more excited for others to read my novel. However, now that I’m here, only a few weeks away from its launch, I find myself gripped by this crazy fear. What if nobody buys the book?

I’ve worked so hard, spent countless hours creating Rory, Jake, and other fantastic characters, but if nobody reads their story, they still won’t exist. It’s a weird experience to know that the success of this novel is for the large part out of my hands. I can talk, text, promote in every way I can think of, but I cannot force you to buy the book. The only thing holding me together right now is faith–faith that people will purchase this book. And once they find out how wonderful it is, they’ll spread the word. But having no real control is a very scary thing.
